Her first challenge came from her family: “My family were not at all happy for me to become a journalist. They said it ran against our culture and that women should not work in male-dominated environments.” Another problem was money. After completing secondary school in Hargeisa, Naima could not afford to go to university. She managed to find a free journalism course and obtained a diploma before doing a two-year unpaid internship with Bulsho TV. She then worked for a number of media houses in different parts of Somalia, including Garowe, Bossasso and Mogadishu. Her financial problems did not stop there as she was often paid irregularly or not at all. Naima also faced the challenge of clannism, especially when she worked in places where her clan was considered the enemy. She says her colleagues believed her clan identity meant she would not be able to be neutral. She says clan discrimination led to her being bullied, made to do extra work and not being paid her salary. Naima is especially interested in reporting on the vulnerable in society and covering issues usually considered untouchable in the Somali media. She tells human stories, including that of an old man who has lived for years with HIV/AIDS. Another story focused on a grandmother whose mentally ill daughter ran away from home after it was destroyed by floods. She has never been seen again, leaving the old woman to care for her grandchildren alone. “I believe Bilan will be a game-changer for all women in Somalia and for me personally,” says Naima. “I hope it will give us the freedom and safety to do a different kind of journalism beyond Somalia’s usual media diet of male- dominated politics and conflict.” https://www.bilan.media/farhio-bio daily 0.75 2022-12-25 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/625180a105590b080b1bd1f9/ccdec6b7-1ee8-4d18-aeaa-96718655585b/DSC00353.JPG Farhio bio - Farhio Mohamed Hussein, Reporter Farhio Mohamed Hassan has been a journalist for 10 years. She worked for Aman Radio and Hatuf Radio while studying for her degree in Journalism and Mass Communication at Mogadishu’s Modern University for Science and Technology. She then worked as a producer and editor for Dalsan Media Group and BBC Media Action. “So many of my female colleagues have left the profession because of harassment and a lack of opportunities,” she says. “But I stuck it out because I believe women as well as men need to bring Somalia’s difficulties into the open, however difficult it may be.” Farhio would like to tell more stories about women in rural areas, especially those involved in agriculture. “Media reports about Somali women often focus on those in urban areas and IDP camps,” says Farhio. “I want to tell the stories of women who run businesses in the countryside, who support their families by farming their land, selling produce and setting up small enterprises.” She wants to report on women who have successful lives in rural areas, moving away from the stereotypes of nomadic women who have lost everything through drought, floods and war. https://www.bilan.media/fathi-bio daily 0.75 2023-01-22 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/625180a105590b080b1bd1f9/9f1f8483-beaa-4383-998b-781213bb1567/DSC09871.JPG Fathi Bio - Fathi Mohamed Ahmed, Chief Editor It was Fathi’s grandmother who introduced her to the world of journalism. As a child, she would sit with her every day and listen to the BBC on the radio. “I decided to be a journalist when I was very young,” says Fathi. “I told my parents I was going to computer classes in the afternoon after school but that was not true. I was studying journalism at a college in Mogadishu.” Fathi hid what she was doing from her family because many Somalis believe journalism is an unacceptable career for women. “After eight months, my father discovered I was studying media. He told me to stop, saying it would destroy my future and bring shame on the family. Our community believes women who work in the media are not good people.” Fathi told her father journalism was her calling and she could not stop. Eventually he relented. By the age of 21 she was Head of the Production Department at Goobjoog Media. Now her family is proud of her. Much of Somali media is dominated by coverage of politics and conflict. Fathi wants to change all that by focusing on social issues, especially taboo subjects like post-partum depression, female drug addiction and HIV/ AIDS. She also wants to tell the stories of people who have triumphed over adversity. Bilan has given her the platform to do it. “As an all-women media house we are bringing hidden subjects into the open in a responsible and sensitive way. Our sisters, mothers and grandmothers talk to us about issues they never dare speak about with men,” she says. “If there was no Bilan, this kind of journalism would not exist in Somalia.” Like many other Somali journalists, Fathi faces daily risks, both in terms of harassment and threats and in terms of physical danger. When she was working on a report about rape in IDP camps the government ordered her to stop. The director of the media house she was working for also told her to abandon the story. “I felt awful,” she said. On 14 October 2017, Fathi was in a restaurant at Zoobe Junction in Mogadishu. A massive truck bomb exploded killing about 600 people. One of the dead was Fathi’s colleague who was with her at the time. As a married mother of three children, Fathi has faced further challenges. “Most female journalists in Somalia stop working when they get married,” she says. “I didn’t want to do that because I love my profession and I like earning my own money. I am lucky because my husband fully supports me. I am setting an example for other women journalists by showing them you don’t have to stop working when you get married.” “Being pregnant was another problem. She was brought up and educated in the vast refugee camp of Dadaab, for a time the largest in the world. “Living in Dadaab was a mixture of pleasure and hardship,” she says. “Some people probably find it strange that I say that living in a refugee camp was pleasurable, but it was enjoyable compared with Somalia because there was peace.” After completing a journalism course at Kenya’s North Eastern National Polytechnic, Kiin worked for a year as a radio producer and reporter in Kenya for the Somali station Risala FM and the Kenyan station Key FM. She then decided to go home to Somalia despite the ongoing insecurity. She moved to the southern city of Kismayo where she worked for Radio Kismayo and other media outlets. Kiin’s very first radio programme focused on women’s issues and she remains committed to telling their stories. She plays an active role in women’s media groups including the Somali Media Women’s Association. Kiin says Bilan is the place for her as it will provide a safe and inspiring environment for women to tell their stories. “Ask any Somali who they depend on. They will always say ‘my mother’. From an early age, she noticed that women in the region were not equal to men and decided to dedicate her life to fighting for their rights. She finished school in 2019 and went straight into journalism at the same time as studying for her degree. She has worked as a technician and reporter at Radio Baidoa, and a producer at South-West state radio and television. Shukri faced many challenges after she decided to become a journalist. “I come from a rural clan which does not want any of its members to become journalists, especially young women. We come from the bush, where the concept of being a journalist does not exist.” She says people from her clan do not understand what being a journalist involves, that they insult and threaten her because of her job. Like other journalists in Somalia, she also faces threats from militant groups. “Even though I am young, I am ready to leave my family in Baidoa and move to Mogadishu to work for Bilan,” says Shukri. “I want to highlight the problems women face in my region, especially in terms of political representation.” Shukri has already made a difference in South-West state. She noticed that not a single woman held a Director’s position in the administration and decided to raise the issue in the media. She organised a talk show, inviting people in powerful positions to take part in the debate. She studied international relations at New Generation university in the city. At the age of 20 she started to write a book. It took her three years to complete. It is called ‘Raad Somali’ or ‘Somali Footprints’ and explores the vexed question of the origins of the Somali people. Hinda self-published the book, paying with her own money for 300 copies to be printed. “I took the books to events and sold them,” she says. “People said I was far too young to have written a book but when they read it they praised me for doing such a good job.” She is now writing her second book, based on the life stories of children who grow up without parents after being orphaned or abandoned. She was so good that she is now a permanent member of the team. “It was never my plan to work in media,” says Ifrah. “I studied political science and international relations and hope to be a diplomat one day.” “After completing my degree at SIMAD university in Mogadishu, I became frustrated as I couldn’t find a job. I saw an advert for Bilan’s internship programme on Instagram and applied. I had started to follow them on social media after hearing about Somalia’s only all-women media house and wanting to find out more about them.” Ifrah was born in Mogadishu and, like so many people, had to flee the city with her family due to fierce fighting. She spent several years in the northern city of Hargeisa before returning home.
